Use Tableau with AI via MCP
A dashboard always answers the question it was built for – everything else turns into a search. Tableau offers an official MCP server for Tableau Cloud plus a self-hosted variant as an npm package. That lets CompanyGPT reach published content and put metrics into words.
What is Tableau?
Tableau is a platform for business intelligence and data visualization. Teams connect data sources, build interactive dashboards from them and publish those for colleagues. Tableau belongs to Salesforce and is available both as Tableau Cloud and as a self-operated Tableau Server.
In many organizations Tableau is the layer where raw data has already been condensed into understandable metrics. That is exactly what makes the platform valuable for AI agents: instead of reinterpreting tables, an agent can draw on agreed metrics and published data sources to explain, compare or write up results.

How to Connect Tableau to CompanyGPT
For Tableau Cloud there is an official remote MCP server at mcp.tableau.com. The connection uses streamable HTTP and sign-in runs through OAuth 2.1. CompanyGPT connects to this endpoint directly; no extra infrastructure is required.
For environments where a cloud endpoint is not an option, the MCP server is also published as an npm package for self-hosting. In that case we run it as a container inside your CompanyGPT environment and authenticate it with a personal access token (PAT). All traffic then stays within your own tenant.
Which of the two fits is something we work out together with your BI owner or BI team. Your CompanyGPT administrators then define through roles and groups who is allowed to use the Tableau integration.
Typical Use Cases
How AI agents in CompanyGPT work with Tableau
Have dashboard content explained
Rather than hunting for the right dashboard, a department asks for the metric directly and gets the value, the period and the source of the analysis.
Draft a report from metrics
For the monthly review, a draft is produced that picks up figures from published Tableau content and summarizes the key movements in prose.
Overview of the content inventory
The BI team can see which workbooks and data sources are published for a given topic – useful for cleanups and onboarding.
Frequently Asked Questions
Tableau and AI – the most important answers
Is there an official MCP server for Tableau?
Yes. An official remote server is available for Tableau Cloud at mcp.tableau.com. The server is additionally published as an npm package that can be run yourself.
What is the difference between remote and self-hosting?
With the remote endpoint, CompanyGPT connects directly to Tableau Cloud via OAuth 2.1. With self-hosting we run the server as a container in your CompanyGPT environment and authenticate it with a personal access token.
Which permissions apply to the AI?
The rights of the connected Tableau identity are what count. Content that identity is not entitled to remains unreachable through the integration as well.
Does this work with Tableau Server in our own data center?
The official remote endpoint targets Tableau Cloud. For self-operated installations the self-hosted variant is the appropriate route; we align the specific setup with your IT.
Who decides which employees can use Tableau in chat?
Your administrators control that in CompanyGPT via roles and groups. The integration can be assigned to specific agents or departments.
