What is Microsoft Teams?
Microsoft Teams is Microsoft’s collaboration platform and part of Microsoft 365. It combines chat, channels, telephony, video meetings and file storage in a single interface and serves as the central place for internal communication in many organizations – from day-to-day coordination to project work.
For AI agents, Teams is therefore primarily a source of context: who decided what and when, which topics run in which channel, what was covered in the last meeting. An MCP connection makes that context retrievable on demand instead of leaving it buried in chat history.

How to Connect Microsoft Teams to CompanyGPT
The connection runs through companyM365, our addon for Microsoft 365. It provides an MCP server over streamable HTTP that is operated inside your own CompanyGPT environment and reads Teams data through Microsoft Graph. No third-party infrastructure is involved, and no Microsoft 365 Copilot licenses are required.
Sign-in happens per user via Entra ID: each employee connects their own Microsoft account, and access takes place on their behalf. An agent therefore sees exactly the teams, channels and chats the signed-in user is already allowed to see. Your administrators register the application once in your Entra ID tenant and grant the required consent; in CompanyGPT you then control by role and group who may use the Teams integration.
As a factual alternative, Microsoft offers its own Agent 365 approach with the “Work IQ” MCP servers, including one for Teams. It is currently in preview and requires a Microsoft 365 Copilot license per user. We can connect either path and help you assess which one fits your licensing situation.

Does Microsoft Teams have an official MCP server?
As part of Agent 365, Microsoft provides a Work IQ MCP server for Teams that is currently in preview and requires a Microsoft 365 Copilot license per user. In CompanyGPT, the connection is primarily made through our companyM365 addon, which works without Copilot licenses.
How is Teams connected to CompanyGPT?
Through companyM365. The addon runs as an MCP server inside your own CompanyGPT environment, talks to Microsoft Graph and is connected via streamable HTTP. Users sign in with their Microsoft account through Entra ID.
Does the AI see every team and chat in the company?
No. Access happens on behalf of the signed-in user. An agent only sees the teams, channels and chats that user is authorized for in Microsoft 365 – existing permissions remain fully in effect.
What does our IT need to set up once?
The application is registered in your Entra ID tenant and receives the required admin consent for the necessary Graph permissions. After that, employees connect their own accounts. Which roles and groups may use the integration is defined by your administrators in CompanyGPT.
Does the data stay in our tenant?
CompanyGPT and companyM365 run in your own cloud tenant and communicate directly with Microsoft 365. The Teams data itself remains in your Microsoft 365 tenant and is only retrieved for the request at hand.
