CompanyGPT Integration MCP server: streamable HTTP

Use Metabase with AI via MCP

Metabase is the low-threshold analytics surface for everyone who does not write SQL. Since Metabase 61 (May 2026) the platform ships an MCP server of its own, reachable on your instance. CompanyGPT uses it to access saved questions and dashboards – with exactly the permissions of the signed-in user.

What is Metabase?

Metabase is a business intelligence tool that lets teams query databases, save results as questions and arrange them into dashboards. The design is deliberately approachable: analyses are built through a graphical interface, and SQL is possible but not a prerequisite. Metabase can be used as a hosted service or run entirely on your own infrastructure – the latter being one reason for its adoption in privacy-sensitive environments.

For AI agents, Metabase is attractive because curated analyses already live there. An agent does not have to guess at database structures; it can work from saved questions and the models behind them. That keeps answers closer to the definitions the organization has already agreed on internally.

How to Connect Metabase to CompanyGPT

Since Metabase 61 (May 2026), an MCP server is built directly into Metabase. It is not installed separately but exposed by your own instance under the path {instance}/api/metabase-mcp. This applies to hosted and self-operated installations alike. Versions 62 and 63 added further tools and auditing.

Sign-in runs through the OAuth mechanism of your Metabase instance. As a result, access matches each user’s own permissions. Collections, questions or databases a person is not entitled to in Metabase stay invisible to the agent as well. No separate permission model is introduced.

The prerequisite is that your instance runs a suitable version and is reachable from the CompanyGPT environment. For internally operated installations we align the network setup with your IT. Your administrators then assign the integration in CompanyGPT by role and group.

Typical Use Cases

How AI agents in CompanyGPT work with Metabase

Retrieve saved questions

Marketing asks how sign-ups are developing and gets the answer from an already defined Metabase question – without opening the interface.

Put dashboards in context

Ahead of the weekly review, the agent summarizes which values in a dashboard have moved and which metrics fall outside the usual range.

Rediscover existing analyses

New team members can see which collections and questions exist for a topic instead of clicking through the folder structure.

Frequently Asked Questions

Metabase and AI – the most important answers

Does an additional MCP server have to be installed?

No. Since Metabase 61 the MCP server is part of the application and reachable on your instance. No further software is added.

Which Metabase version is required?

Metabase 61 or newer. If your instance runs an older release, an update is the prerequisite for the connection. Versions 62 and 63 add further tools and auditing.

Does the AI see every analysis in the company?

No. The signed-in user's permissions apply. Collections and databases without a grant remain inaccessible through the integration too.

Does this also work with a self-operated instance?

Yes. The built-in MCP server is available regardless of operating model. For internally hosted installations we clarify reachability from the CompanyGPT environment together with your IT.

Where does the queried data flow?

CompanyGPT runs in your own cloud tenant and talks directly to your Metabase instance. No further service provider is involved in the connection.
