Use Matomo with AI via MCP
Web analytics data is rarely under-collected but often under-used, because getting to the right report takes effort. Matomo offers an official MCP server plugin in its Marketplace that opens the reporting API to AI agents – and it runs wherever your Matomo runs.
What is Matomo?
Matomo is an open source web analytics platform developed by InnoCraft. It records visits, page views, campaigns, goals and e-commerce metrics, and is widely used in Germany because it can be operated in your own data center with data ownership staying with the operator. Alongside self-hosting, Matomo also offers a hosted cloud variant.
For AI agents, Matomo is a structured source of fact about the digital presence: metrics and segments are retrievable programmatically through the reporting API. That makes it possible to answer questions from marketing, sales or management directly, without anyone needing to know which report view to open.

How to Connect Matomo to CompanyGPT
Matomo provides an official MCP server plugin through the Matomo Marketplace (plugins.matomo.org/McpServer), documented in the API reference at developer.matomo.org. It is activated inside your Matomo installation, which makes the MCP server part of your own analytics environment. In addition, community servers exist, such as FGRibreau/mcp-matomo with 16 tools and a server by Openmost covering more than 57 API modules.
Authentication uses a Matomo API token (auth_token) that remains on the MCP server. We set up a dedicated account with read permissions for the intended websites, so the assistant only evaluates the properties released for it. In CompanyGPT, your administrators control by role and group who may use the analysis.
How CompanyGPT reaches your instance depends on the operating model. With hosted Matomo Cloud, access over the internet is sufficient. If you run Matomo yourself – the common case in Germany – we set up network connectivity together with your IT team so the reporting API does not have to be exposed publicly.
Note for on-premises operation: CompanyGPT runs in your own Azure tenant – so your on-premises network can be connected directly: via a site-to-site VPN (Azure VPN Gateway) or ExpressRoute between your corporate network and the virtual network of your CompanyGPT environment. The system does not need to be publicly reachable; we set up the connection together with your IT team.
Typical Use Cases
How AI agents in CompanyGPT work with Matomo
Review campaigns after the fact
Marketing asks how visits and goal completions developed during a campaign period and receives the figures along with a comparison to the preceding period.
Notice anomalies early
An agent compares the development of key pages over recent weeks and points out drops that would otherwise be lost in day-to-day work.
Figures for the monthly report
Instead of exporting several report views, a text summary of the most important metrics is generated that can go straight into reporting.
Frequently Asked Questions
Matomo and AI – the most important answers
Does Matomo have an official MCP server?
Yes. Matomo publishes an MCP server plugin through its own Marketplace, activated inside the Matomo installation. Community servers such as mcp-matomo and a server by Openmost with broader module coverage exist as well.
Where does the MCP server run?
With the plugin variant, as part of your own Matomo installation. Your analytics data therefore stays in your environment, and no third-party service sits between CompanyGPT and Matomo.
We use Matomo Cloud – do we need network connectivity?
No. With the hosted variant, regular internet access is enough. A secured network connection is only relevant if your Matomo instance sits in your own data center and should not be publicly reachable.
Which websites does the assistant access?
Those for which the configured API token holds read permissions. Matomo user management lets you scope access per website; in CompanyGPT your administrators additionally release the integration only to selected roles.
Does the connection change our data protection configuration?
No. Tracking in Matomo stays exactly as configured, including your anonymization and retention settings. The MCP connection only reads the analyses that already exist.
