Use Linear with AI via MCP
Linear is the working record of many product and engineering teams: every requirement, bug and decision ends up as an issue. The official Linear MCP server gives CompanyGPT direct access – including a dedicated endpoint that permits read access only.
What is Linear?
Linear is an issue tracking and product planning tool used primarily by software and product teams. Work is captured as issues, bundled into cycles and projects, and tied to higher-level goals through roadmaps and initiatives. A tightly designed data model and a mature GraphQL API are characteristic of the product.
For AI agents, that structure is an advantage: status, priority, assignee and cycle exist as clean fields, while descriptions and comments supply the domain context. This makes it possible not only to summarize individual tickets, but to answer questions spanning an entire cycle – and to create new issues out of the conversation.

How to Connect Linear to CompanyGPT
Linear operates an official MCP server at mcp.linear.app/mcp, connected via streamable HTTP. A second variant at mcp.linear.app/mcp/readonly exposes read-only tools – useful when an agent should deliver analysis but must never change data. Self-hosting is not offered: the server is available exclusively as a remote service.
Two authentication paths exist. OAuth 2.1 with dynamic client registration (DCR) is the standard route – CompanyGPT registers itself as a client automatically, each user authorizes with their own Linear account and works with that account’s permissions. Alternatively, an API key can be stored, for instance for a technical account that produces reports for one fixed team.
In CompanyGPT, your administrators use roles and groups to determine who may use the Linear integration, and tailor per agent which tools are enabled. Combining the read-only endpoint with tool permissions allows very finely graded scenarios.
Typical Use Cases
How AI agents in CompanyGPT work with Linear
Sprint status on demand
Product leadership asks in chat which issues in the current cycle are still open and where things are stuck – the agent evaluates status, priority and assignment and reports back.
Capture bug reports properly
From a free-text support description, the agent creates a structured issue with title, reproduction steps, priority and the right team.
Prepare release notes
For a completed cycle, the agent compiles the resolved issues and drafts change notes for customers or internal stakeholders.
Frequently Asked Questions
Linear and AI – the most important answers
Does Linear have an official MCP server?
Yes. Linear provides an official MCP server at mcp.linear.app/mcp, addressed via streamable HTTP. An additional endpoint at mcp.linear.app/mcp/readonly limits access to read-only tools.
Can we run the server ourselves?
No. The Linear MCP server is available exclusively as a remote service; self-hosting is not offered. CompanyGPT therefore connects directly to Linear's endpoint.
How do we make sure the AI never changes tickets?
Use the read-only endpoint and enable only read tools for the agent in CompanyGPT. Write operations are then technically excluded rather than merely prohibited by policy.
Which sign-in methods are supported?
OAuth 2.1 with dynamic client registration for user-level sign-in, plus API keys for technical accounts. With OAuth, each user's own Linear permissions apply.
Does our data stay in our own tenant?
CompanyGPT runs in your own cloud tenant and retrieves data directly from Linear, with no detour via third parties. Your existing contract with Linear remains in force for Linear as a vendor.
