Use Jira with AI via MCP
Jira reflects what a company is currently working on – but getting an answer usually means filters, boards and JQL. Through the official Atlassian Rovo MCP server, CompanyGPT answers questions about issues directly in chat, with the signed-in user's permissions.
What is Jira?
Jira is Atlassian’s tool for planning and tracking work. It began as a bug tracker and today serves many organizations as the central system for software development, IT service management and general project management: issues are organized in projects, prioritized through boards and sprints, guided by workflows through defined status transitions, and evaluated in reports.
That structure is what makes Jira valuable for AI agents – the current state of work is available in a machine-readable form, including ownership, due dates, links and comment histories. Questions such as “What is blocking the release?” or “Which tickets did my team close this week?” can be answered without anyone hand-crafting the right query first.

How to Connect Jira to CompanyGPT
Atlassian provides an official, generally available connection for its cloud products through the Rovo MCP server. The endpoint is mcp.atlassian.com/v1/mcp/authv2 and is addressed via streamable HTTP. Worth knowing: Jira, Confluence and Bitbucket share this same endpoint – so one configured Atlassian connection can cover several products, provided they are enabled for your organization.
Authentication runs via OAuth 2.1 or, alternatively, an Atlassian API token, provided API token authentication has been enabled by the organization admin. With OAuth, each user authorizes with their own Atlassian account, so the agent sees exactly the projects and issues that account is entitled to. Existing project and permission schemes in Jira therefore remain fully effective.
The older SSE-based Atlassian MCP access has no longer been supported since 30 June 2026. We therefore set up new connections exclusively via the streamable HTTP endpoint and migrate existing configurations during rollout. In CompanyGPT, your administrators use roles and groups to define which teams may use the Jira integration.
Typical Use Cases
How AI agents in CompanyGPT work with Jira
Sprint status on demand
The scrum master asks about the current sprint and receives an overview of completed, in-progress and blocked issues, including who owns what.
Tickets straight out of a meeting
From a set of meeting notes, the agent creates a well-structured issue with title, description and acceptance criteria in the right project.
Spot patterns in the backlog
The support team has open issues analyzed by component and frequency to make recurring failure patterns visible for product planning.
Frequently Asked Questions
Jira and AI – the most important answers
Does Jira have an official MCP server?
Yes. Atlassian operates the generally available Rovo MCP server at mcp.atlassian.com/v1/mcp/authv2. It covers the Atlassian Cloud products, Jira among them.
Do Jira and Confluence need separate connections?
No. Both products are addressed through the same Atlassian MCP endpoint. A single configured connection can therefore cover several Atlassian products, provided they are enabled for your organization.
Does the AI see all Jira projects?
No. Access is governed by the permissions of the connected Atlassian account. Projects and issues a user may not see in Jira stay invisible to the agent as well.
What happens to the old SSE access?
The older SSE endpoint has no longer been supported since 30 June 2026. We configure new connections directly over streamable HTTP and convert existing setups during rollout.
Can the AI edit issues as well?
The available scope follows from the tools the Rovo MCP server exposes and the rights of the connected account. In CompanyGPT you decide per agent whether it may only read or also write.
