CompanyGPT Integration MCP server: streamable HTTP

Use Google Sheets with AI via MCP

Between the ERP system and the reporting layer, almost every company runs a layer of spreadsheets where the actual steering happens. Google Sheets can be connected through a Google-operated MCP server, currently in developer preview. CompanyGPT authenticates via OAuth using a client ID belonging to your company.

What is Google Sheets?

Google Sheets is the spreadsheet application in Google Workspace. It runs entirely in the browser, supports real-time collaborative editing and offers data validation, conditional formatting and links to other Workspace services alongside formulas and pivot analysis.

In practice, spreadsheets are used for far more than calculation: as a project list, as a tracker for open items, as an intermediate layer for reporting. That is what makes them interesting for AI agents – they hold structured data that exists in no line-of-business system, and results can be written back in the same structure the team already works in.

How to Connect Google Sheets to CompanyGPT

MCP access runs through sheetsmcp.googleapis.com/mcp/v1 using streamable HTTP. Google operates the server itself and currently lists it as a developer preview – the connection works, but the feature set may still change before general availability. We point this out because it matters for analyses that feed decisions.

Sign-in uses OAuth 2.0 with a client ID from your own Google Cloud project, authorized per user. An agent therefore only reaches spreadsheets that are shared with the respective account in Google Drive. For sensitive calculations we recommend limiting access through Drive sharing rather than adding restrictions only at agent level.

Inside CompanyGPT, roles and groups determine who may use the Sheets integration. Whether an agent may only read or also write values is configured per agent.

Typical Use Cases

How AI agents in CompanyGPT work with Google Sheets

Have figures explained

Controlling asks why a cost centre deviates noticeably in the monthly sheet – the agent reads the relevant ranges and names the line items driving the difference.

Clean up lists

A supplier list that has grown over years is checked for duplicates, inconsistent spellings and missing mandatory fields before it is imported into a core system.

Store research results

Findings from a CompanyGPT chat land as clean rows in the intended worksheet – an overview of researched market participants with consistent columns, for instance.

Frequently Asked Questions

Google Sheets and AI – the most important answers

Does Google operate an MCP server for Sheets?

Yes, at sheetsmcp.googleapis.com/mcp/v1 via streamable HTTP. It belongs to the Google Workspace MCP family and is currently in developer preview.

Can the agent write values into our spreadsheets?

Write actions are possible if you enable them. In CompanyGPT you can define per agent whether access stays read-only. For spreadsheets that drive decisions, read-only is usually the more sensible starting point.

How do we keep salary or costing sheets out of scope?

Through Google Drive sharing. Anything not shared with the signed-in account is unreachable via MCP as well. In addition you can limit the integration to specific roles in CompanyGPT.

Does the AI calculate itself or use the spreadsheet's formulas?

The agent reads the worksheet content including the calculated values. For traceable analysis we recommend keeping the authoritative calculations in the spreadsheet and using AI for interpretation and explanation.

What does the preview status mean for us?

The endpoint is usable, but Google may adjust tools before general availability. We therefore start with a clearly defined use case and expand step by step.
