Shared drives grow faster than anyone can structure them – eventually only those who know the file name find anything. Google provides a dedicated MCP server for Google Drive, currently in developer preview. CompanyGPT uses it via OAuth with a client ID from your own Google Cloud project.
What is Google Drive?
Google Drive is the cloud storage layer of Google Workspace. Alongside personal storage there are shared drives owned by an organizational unit rather than an individual, plus fine-grained permission management, version history and native storage for the Workspace formats for documents, spreadsheets and presentations.
That makes Drive the central file repository for many companies – and one of the most valuable knowledge sources an AI agent can have. Proposals, concepts, minutes and specifications live there; an assistant with read access can find them, relate them to each other and summarize them without copying content into a separate system first.

How to Connect Google Drive to CompanyGPT
Google operates the Drive MCP server at drivemcp.googleapis.com/mcp/v1, addressed via streamable HTTP. The service is available as a developer preview: usable today, but with the caveat that Google may adjust tools and behaviour before general availability.
Sign-in uses OAuth 2.0 with a client ID from your own Google Cloud project. That setup is deliberate: the OAuth client belongs to you, you define which scopes are granted and you can revoke access centrally. Authorization happens per user, so the sharing rules set in Drive apply one to one – at folder, drive and file level.
Which teams may activate the Drive integration is controlled in CompanyGPT through roles and groups. For scenarios where documents should sit permanently and searchably inside the AI environment, Drive can additionally be combined with the companyRAG and companyFILES add-ons.

Does Google Drive have an official MCP server?

Can the AI reach files the user is not allowed to open?
No. Authorization happens per user via OAuth and Drive enforces its sharing rules unchanged. An agent only sees what the signed-in employee could open themselves.
How does this differ from companyFILES?
Via MCP the agent accesses Drive live and works with the current state. companyFILES stores selected documents permanently inside the CompanyGPT environment and makes them searchable there. The two approaches can be combined.
What does the preview status mean in practice?
The endpoint is available and works, but Google may still make adjustments before general availability. For a first step we therefore recommend a clearly scoped use case.
