Use Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central with AI via MCP
Business Central holds the commercial core of many mid-sized companies together – from financial accounting to purchasing, sales and inventory. With 2026 Release Wave 1, Microsoft provides a hosted MCP server for it that can be connected to CompanyGPT as a remote integration.
What is Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central?
Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central is the ERP system for small and mid-sized companies in the Microsoft ecosystem and the successor to Dynamics NAV, still widely known in German-speaking markets as Navision. It covers financial accounting, purchasing, sales, inventory, projects and light manufacturing, and is usually rolled out with an implementation partner and extended for the specific industry.
As a result, Business Central holds the data people ask about most often in daily business: order status, delivery dates, stock levels, prices, open items. An AI assistant that answers those questions directly against the system removes the detours via lists, exports and internal follow-up questions – and opens up the ERP to roles that never work in its forms.

How to Connect Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central to CompanyGPT
Since 2026 Release Wave 1, Microsoft operates an official hosted MCP server for Business Central at https://mcp.businesscentral.dynamics.com, reachable via streamable HTTP. Headers such as TenantId, EnvironmentName, Company and ConfigurationName route the connection to the right environment. The server has been in public preview since April 2026 – scope and availability may still change, and we keep an eye on that status during the project.
Sign-in runs through Microsoft Entra ID via OAuth 2.0, using the same identities your employees already work with. Which tools the MCP server offers is configured granularly by your administrators on the MCP server configuration page inside Business Central: access is read-only by default, and editing tools have to be enabled explicitly. CompanyGPT adds the second layer – there, your administrators control by role and group who may use the integration at all.
The official MCP server applies to Business Central online. If your system runs on-premises – often grown historically from Navision days – we connect it individually via the Business Central API v2.0 (REST/OData under /api/v2.0/) and custom API pages. This also results in MCP tools that your teams use in CompanyGPT just like the cloud variant; the connection into your company network is set up together with your IT.
Note for on-premises operation: CompanyGPT runs in your own Azure tenant – so your on-premises network can be connected directly: via a site-to-site VPN (Azure VPN Gateway) or ExpressRoute between your corporate network and the virtual network of your CompanyGPT environment. The system does not need to be publicly reachable; we set up the connection together with your IT team.

Preparing purchasing rounds
Purchasing has order history, supplier terms and current stock for an item group summarized before the next round of orders is placed.
Keeping receivables in view
Accounting asks about open items and payment behaviour for a customer and receives an overview that doubles as preparation for the next conversation.
Frequently Asked Questions
Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central and AI – the most important answers
Does Business Central have an official MCP server?
Yes. With 2026 Release Wave 1, Microsoft provides a hosted MCP server at mcp.businesscentral.dynamics.com, addressed via streamable HTTP. It has been in public preview since April 2026.
What does the preview status mean in practice?
Preview means the server is usable, but scope and conditions may still change. We therefore usually start with clearly scoped use cases and watch how it matures instead of making critical processes depend on it right away.
Does this work with our on-premises installation?
The official MCP server targets Business Central online. On-premises systems – often grown from Navision days – are connected individually via API v2.0 and custom API pages; your teams then use the result in CompanyGPT in exactly the same way.
Can the AI change data in Business Central?
Only if you want it to. On the MCP server configuration page in Business Central, access is read-only by default; editing tools are enabled deliberately by your administrators.
Does every user see the same ERP data?
Sign-in runs through Microsoft Entra ID, so the permissions defined in Business Central apply. On top of that, roles and groups in CompanyGPT decide who may invoke the integration at all.
