Use Autodesk Fusion with AI via MCP
Fusion keeps design, simulation and manufacturing preparation in one cloud-based data model – a good basis for querying project status. For connectivity we use the official MCP sample servers of Autodesk Platform Services and operate them inside your CompanyGPT environment.
What is Autodesk Fusion?
Autodesk Fusion, formerly Fusion 360, is Autodesk’s cloud-based product development platform. CAD, CAM and CAE work on a shared model, data is stored centrally in the Autodesk cloud, and modelling happens through a desktop client. Across the DACH region Fusion is common with SMEs, product developers and prototyping teams.
Because the data already lives centrally, Fusion is easier to reach for AI agents than classic desktop CAD systems. Project and version information is especially useful: which revisions exist, who changed something last, which components belong to an assembly. Questions like these come up daily in development teams and currently cost clicks through the interface.
Connection at a Glance
- MCP server
- Official APS sample servers (Autodesk) plus community add-ins, self-hosted
- Transport
- stdio – operated as a container in your own tenant
- Authentication
- APS OAuth2 / Secure Service Accounts; local add-in API in the user context
- Interfaces
- Fusion Data API (GraphQL/REST), Fusion add-in API (Python/C++)
- Operating model
- SaaS with central data storage in the Autodesk cloud
- Note
- Community add-in servers are tied to an individual workstation
How to Connect Autodesk Fusion to CompanyGPT
There is no hosted remote MCP server for Fusion. Autodesk does, however, publish official sample MCP servers for Autodesk Platform Services in its own GitHub organization (aps-mcp-server-nodejs, aps-mcp-server-python) including authentication reference implementations. We run those as a container in your CompanyGPT environment and point them at your Fusion data – via APS OAuth2 or Secure Service Accounts and the Fusion Data API.
Alongside that, community MCP servers exist that run as a local add-in inside Fusion and drive its scripting API, for example fusion-cad-mcp or fusion360-mcp-server. These projects do not come from Autodesk and are tied to an individual workstation: the server runs next to that user’s Fusion client. For a company-wide assistant the platform data route is therefore the better fit; the local variant remains an option for targeted automation at the design workstation.
In both cases the MCP server runs in your environment, credentials never leave the tenant, and your CompanyGPT administrators release the integration by role and group to the teams that need it.
Typical Use Cases
How AI agents in CompanyGPT work with Autodesk Fusion
Query project status
The development team asks which versions of an assembly exist and when they were created, and gets the overview right in chat instead of through the data panel in Fusion.
Rediscover components
Before starting a new design, the agent checks whether a comparable part already exists in the project data and names the hits with their project assignment.
Report design progress
For the weekly project status, the assistant condenses the latest changes to the relevant models into a short paragraph.
Frequently Asked Questions
Autodesk Fusion and AI – the most important answers
Does Autodesk Fusion have an official MCP server?
Autodesk publishes official sample MCP servers for Autodesk Platform Services, through which Fusion data is reachable as well. There is no remote endpoint hosted by Autodesk – the server is operated yourself.
How do the community servers differ?
The known community projects run as an add-in inside the local Fusion client and drive its scripting API. They do not come from Autodesk and only work on the workstation where they are installed.
Do we need a VPN connection?
Not for the cloud route – Fusion is a SaaS product and access happens through the APS interfaces. A network link only becomes relevant if you additionally want to connect local file storage.
What data can the assistant see?
Only the areas the APS account in use is authorized for. Scope can be limited to individual projects or hubs, and in CompanyGPT role and group settings decide who uses the integration at all.
Does our design data stay protected?
The MCP server runs in your own cloud tenant, as does CompanyGPT. Retrieved data stays inside that environment; the assessment of Autodesk as the cloud platform provider continues to follow your contract with Autodesk.
