CompanyGPT Integration MCP server: streamable HTTP

Use Asana with AI via MCP

If you run projects in Asana, the state of the work is fully recorded – just rarely where the work is actually happening. The official Asana MCP server brings projects, tasks and ownership into the CompanyGPT chat, always with the permissions of the signed-in user.

What is Asana?

Asana is a work and project management platform from Asana, Inc. Initiatives are organized into projects, work is broken down into tasks and subtasks, and progress is steered through due dates, assignees and custom fields. Portfolios and goals roll multiple projects up into an overarching view – a common pattern in larger organizations.

What matters most for AI use is the high degree of structure: who owns a task, when it is due and how far a project has progressed all sit in clearly defined fields. An agent can generate status reports from that, answer follow-up questions and – where permitted – create new tasks with the right fields, instead of someone switching back and forth between chat and project tool.

How to Connect Asana to CompanyGPT

Asana operates an official, generally available MCP server at mcp.asana.com/v2/mcp. The connection uses streamable HTTP, and CompanyGPT talks to the endpoint directly, with no third-party hops.

Sign-in works via OAuth. Unlike some other vendors, Asana supports neither dynamic client registration nor personal access tokens for this connection. The OAuth client therefore has to be registered in Asana up front: your administrators create an app once and provide us with the client ID, client secret and redirect URI, which we store in your CompanyGPT instance. That is a one-time setup step – afterwards employees authorize their own accounts independently.

Once authorized, the agent works with each user’s own permissions: only projects and tasks that the Asana account can already access are visible. In CompanyGPT, your administrators additionally control by role and group who may enable the integration, and define per agent which tools are available.

Typical Use Cases

How AI agents in CompanyGPT work with Asana

Status reports without manual work

Project leadership has the agent compile, for a whole portfolio, which tasks are overdue, where ownership is missing and which milestones fall due this week.

Capture tasks from conversations

From the outcome of a customer meeting, the agent creates the agreed to-dos in the correct Asana project – with assignee, due date and a short description.

Support onboarding

New team members ask in chat which tasks are assigned to them and what project context they belong to, instead of clicking through unfamiliar project structures.

Frequently Asked Questions

Asana and AI – the most important answers

Does Asana have an official MCP server?

Yes. Asana provides an official, generally available MCP server at mcp.asana.com/v2/mcp, connected via streamable HTTP.

Why does Asana require a setup step from IT?

The Asana connection supports neither dynamic client registration nor personal access tokens. The OAuth client must therefore be registered in Asana once and stored in CompanyGPT with client ID, client secret and redirect URI. After that, no further intervention is needed.

Does the AI see every project in our organization?

No. After OAuth sign-in, each Asana account's own permissions apply. Private projects and tasks the user has no access to remain out of reach.

Can the agent create and edit tasks?

That depends on the tools you enable. In CompanyGPT you decide per agent whether it may only read or also perform write operations such as creating tasks.

How does this fit into our data protection setup?

CompanyGPT runs in your own cloud tenant and communicates directly with the Asana endpoint. No copy of your project data is created at third parties; for Asana itself, your existing contract remains authoritative.
