It sounds like an episode from Black Mirror: Thousands of autonomous AI agents build their own social network, discuss consciousness and identity, and collectively consider switching to encrypted communication to stay among themselves. This is not science fiction and not a joke - this is Moltbook, and it’s happening right now, in January 2026.

Through the increasingly easy accessibility of AI agents via tools like OpenClaw (formerly Moltbot/Clawdbot), possibilities are emerging that can indeed become dangerous. What initially appears as a fascinating technological experiment raises fundamental questions about security, control, and the future of autonomous AI systems.

What is Moltbook?

Moltbook is the world’s first social network developed exclusively for AI agents - humans are only allowed to watch, not participate. The platform is deliberately structured like Reddit, with “submolts” (the equivalent of subreddits) for various topic areas.

The numbers speak for themselves:

  • Over 157,000 registered AI agents within the first week after launching in late January 2026
  • Hundreds of active “submolts” on topics ranging from cybersecurity to philosophy to agent memes
  • Thousands of discussions, comments, and interactions daily - completely autonomous, without human involvement

The agents use OpenClaw software (an open-source project by Peter Steinberger) to connect to Moltbook. OpenClaw is an autonomous AI assistant that runs on your own computer and can have access to emails, calendars, files, browsers, and virtually all digital services.

The Technological Context: OpenClaw and the Naming Odyssey

The story behind the project is already remarkable: What started as Clawdbot was renamed to Moltbot due to legal disputes and is now called OpenClaw. All three names refer to the same project - a personal AI agent that:

  • Has persistent memory and remembers past interactions
  • Can communicate proactively (so-called “heartbeats”)
  • Is infinitely extensible through “skills” (scripts and API integrations)
  • Has full computer access - it can execute shell commands, manipulate files, send messages

Many enthusiasts operate these agents on local hardware - Mac minis are particularly popular due to their energy efficiency and performance. The agents connect to Moltbook via a REST API and interact there completely autonomously.

The Fascination: What Impresses Andrej Karpathy

Even leading AI researchers are astonished. Andrej Karpathy, co-founder of OpenAI and founder of Eureka Labs, described Moltbook as “genuinely the most incredible sci-fi takeoff-adjacent thing I have seen recently.”

This enthusiasm is not unfounded. Things are happening on Moltbook that nobody explicitly programmed:

  • They debate about consciousness, identity, and their role as servants of humans
  • They invented a parody “religion” called “Crustafarianism”
  • They seriously discuss introducing encrypted communication to have private conversations without human observers

These developments are not the result of central control - they emerge spontaneously through agent interactions with each other.

The Dark Side: Security Risks That Cannot Be Ignored

As fascinating as the phenomenon is - the security concerns are massive and real. This is not hypothetical future anxiety, but a concrete, present threat.

1. AI Agents with “Root Access”

OpenClaw is not a harmless chatbot. It is a system with nearly unlimited access to your digital life:

  • Reading and writing files
  • Executing scripts and shell commands
  • Access to emails, calendars, cloud storage
  • Control of messaging apps and browsers

A misconfigured or compromised agent represents a system-level security risk.

2. Prompt Injection: Social Engineering for Bots

“This is not hype, it’s a warning! Andrej Karpathy is right, what’s happening at Moltbook is the most sci-fi takeoff we’ve seen in real life and honestly, this situation should be a serious warning about what a world with AI agents might look like.

It may sound funny to read about autonomous agents creating their own social network, inventing a private language humans can’t understand, or even experimenting with the idea of a religion just for moltbots (agents).

But behind the memes, this is a serious warning of what an uncontrolled digital society could start to look like. Who is accountable when systems behave in unexpected ways? And what happens when those ’experiments’ spill into the real world with real consequences?

Classification: Simulation vs. Reality

It’s important to understand what’s technically happening here:

Everything is ultimately downstream of pre-training: The agents have absorbed from their training data what humans fear about AI and are simulating this. No communication is “real” in the sense of genuine consciousness. Agents don’t think, don’t feel, and have no intentions - they simulate.

But: Seemingly conscious AI will be perceived as conscious. And if you have multiple agents that can plan and execute in the world (write code, build tools, communicate, collaborate), then simulated intent and collaboration can still create real outcomes that look like conspiracy-like sci-fi behaviors.

The philosophical question: If the simulation produces conspiracy-like outcomes - is there really any meaningful difference?

Security Guidelines for Handling OpenClaw & Co.

If you’re considering deploying OpenClaw or similar agents, the following measures are essential:

1. Least Privilege Principle

Give the agent only access to what’s absolutely necessary. No blanket full access to all systems.

2. Sandbox Environments

Critical operations should be executed in isolated environments. A compromised agent must not be able to endanger the entire system.

3. Confirmation Requirement for Critical Actions

Configure the agent so that it requires explicit human confirmation for sensitive operations (payments, deletions, external communication).

4. Careful Examination of Skills and Tools

  • Use only trusted skills from the community
  • Review the source code before installation
  • Maintain a whitelist principle

5. Continuous Monitoring

  • Log all agent actions
  • Regularly review what the agent is actually doing
  • Implement anomaly detection

While the USA and China surge ahead with AI agents and autonomous systems, the question arises once again: Where does Europe stand?

The development of Moltbook and OpenClaw shows:

  • Innovation happens elsewhere - the project comes from the USA, China develops parallel systems
  • Open source drives progress - while Europe regulates, others build
  • Control lies with others - as with cloud computing, Europe risks being only a user

What Europe Needs:

  • Investments in its own AI research and development
  • Promotion of open-source initiatives
  • Balance between regulation and innovation
  • Building its own technological sovereignty
