Mistral OCR 4.1: Document AI with Bounding Boxes and Confidence Scores (GA since 31 August 2026)
On 31 August 2026, Mistral declared OCR 4.1 (mistral-ocr-4-1) generally available; per the changelog, the first release dates from 16 July 2026. The aliases mistral-ocr-latest and mistral-ocr-4 have pointed to OCR 4.1 since that day – if you use the aliases, you are already working with the new model and should re-check the outputs in your pipeline. The predecessor OCR 4 (mistral-ocr-4-0) had only been released on 23 June 2026.
New in OCR 4.1 per the Mistral documentation:
- Paragraph-level bounding boxes – native, without downstream layout analysis.
- Structural block labels that classify layout elements.
- Block-level confidence scores: the
confidence_scores_granularityparameter now acceptspage,block, andword. This matters for review processes in invoice or contract processing, because uncertain blocks can be routed specifically into a manual check. - Structured annotations and bbox extraction via
/v1/ocr, bulk processing via/v1/batch.
Pricing per the Mistral price list (as of 3 September 2026): $4 per 1,000 pages for OCR, $5 per 1,000 pages with annotations (Document AI). Compared with OCR 3 (around $2 per 1,000 pages), the per-page price has doubled – for high volumes it is worth calculating whether the new structural data justifies the premium.
Leanstral 1.5: Open-Weights Model for Formal Proofs (2 July 2026)
With Leanstral 1.5, Mistral released an update of its model for proof engineering in Lean 4 on 2 July 2026 (changelog entry: 30 June) – a specialist model for formally verified mathematics and software. It is a 119B MoE model with 6B active parameters under Apache 2.0 (HuggingFace: mistralai/Leanstral-1.5-119B-A6B). Per Mistral, it reaches 100% on miniF2F (validation and test), solves 587 of 672 PutnamBench problems, and scores 87% (FATE-H) and 34% (FATE-X); in a test across 57 repositories it found five previously unknown bugs. The model works in two modes: multi-turn theorem proving with compiler feedback, and as a code agent on the file system with language-server integration.
Important for planning: the API endpoint (labs-leanstral-1-5) is free per the Mistral price list, but time-limited as a Labs offering – per the changelog it will be retired on 30 September 2026. After that, self-hosting the open weights remains. For enterprises with formal verification requirements (safety-critical software, cryptography, financial mathematics), Leanstral is a rare European open-weights option in this segment.
Integration with CompanyGPT
All Mistral models are integrated into CompanyGPT and can be operated fully GDPR-compliant in the EU - via Mistral Cloud (Paris), AWS Bedrock (Frankfurt), Azure AI or self-hosted.
Robostral Navigate: Mistral’s Entry into Physical AI
On July 8, 2026, Mistral introduced its first robotics model, Robostral Navigate: an 8B-parameter model for embodied navigation that lets robots traverse complex environments autonomously – controlled via natural-language instructions and with just one RGB camera, without LiDAR or depth sensors. It was trained entirely in simulation (around 400,000 recorded paths across 6,000 virtual environments); on the R2R-CE benchmark, the model achieves state-of-the-art results according to Mistral (79.4% val-seen / 76.6% val-unseen), beating even systems with depth sensing. The model is hardware-agnostic, running on wheeled, legged and flying robots – aimed at manufacturing, logistics, delivery and hospitality.
Important: Mistral has not yet announced the licence or availability (API, weights) at launch. For companies with robotics use cases, Robostral Navigate is nonetheless a remarkable signal that the European vendor is entering physical AI.
Vibe - The New Mistral Agent (formerly Le Chat)
At the end of May 2026, Le Chat was renamed Vibe - a unified AI agent for work and code with Work Mode (multi-stage tasks with connectors to Google Workspace, Outlook, SharePoint, Slack, GitHub and more) and Code Mode (remote coding and pull requests). Vibe is powered by Mistral Medium 3.5.

For 2026 we recommend a two-track strategy: Mistral Medium 3.5 is our recommendation for enterprise agents, coding and reasoning tasks - thanks to toggle reasoning, 77.6% SWE-Bench Verified (per Mistral) and EU data residency including Microsoft Copilot Studio integration. Mistral Small 4 remains the cost-efficient recommendation for standard applications thanks to its open-source licence and MoE efficiency. For open-weights top-tier models there is Mistral Large 3, for specialised workloads Voxtral (audio), Mistral OCR 4.1 (documents – GA since 31 August 2026, with bounding boxes and block confidence), the Ministral 3 Family (edge deployments), Leanstral 1.5 (formal proofs in Lean 4, Apache 2.0) and Robostral Navigate (robotics navigation).
