innFactory AI Consulting from Rosenheim, Germany advises DACH enterprises on GDPR-compliant integration of image generation models. Imagen 4 is Google’s current image model family on Vertex AI and closes an important gap alongside Gemini, Veo and Nano Banana (Gemini 2.5/3 Image).
Imagen 4 – the current family
Imagen 4 was introduced in May 2025 as a public preview on Vertex AI and is now generally available in several variants. As of June 2026, Imagen 4 Upscale (Preview) is also available, AI-upscaling existing images by factors 2x, 3x or 4x.
Roadmap note (as of June 2026)
For many classic image generation workflows, Google now recommends migrating to Gemini 2.5/3 Flash Image (Nano Banana). Several older Imagen endpoints (incl. imagegeneration@002–@006 and parts of imagen-3.0) are scheduled for deprecation by June 30, 2026; Imagen 4 Generate (GA) remains available. For pure text-to-image with premium print quality, Imagen 4 Ultra/Standard remains the reference; for conversational editing and multimodality, Gemini Flash Image is the strategic successor.
Imagen 4 Ultra
- Highest quality in the Imagen family
- Up to 2K resolution
- Best detail, texture and text-in-image rendering
- $0.06 per image
- Recommended for premium print, editorial and brand work
Imagen 4 (Standard)
- Balanced quality/price
- Up to 2048×2048 pixels
- $0.04 per image
- Recommended for most marketing and product use cases
Imagen 4 Fast
- Generation times often under 3 seconds, as low as ~1 second
- $0.02 per image
- Ideal for live apps, mobile workflows and real-time meeting backgrounds
Imagen 4 Upscale (Preview, 2026)
- Dedicated endpoint imagen-4.0-upscale-preview on Vertex AI
- Upscaling factors 2x, 3x and 4x
- Turns 512×512 into a crisp 2048×2048 (4K-capable) result
- AI-based detail reconstruction instead of classic interpolation – ideal as a finishing step after Imagen 4 Standard
Differentiation vs. Gemini 3 Pro Image (Nano Banana Pro)
| Aspect | Imagen 4 | Gemini 3 Pro Image (Nano Banana Pro) |
|---|---|---|
| Focus | Pure text-to-image generation | Conversational editing within the Gemini family |
| Resolution | Up to 2K (Ultra) | Up to 4K |
| Text-in-image | Very strong | Top performer |
| Multi-turn editing | No | Yes |
| Price | $0.02 – $0.06 per image | Higher |
Imagen 4 is the better choice for classic generation workflows; Nano Banana Pro for iterative editing in chat sessions.
GDPR availability in the EU
Imagen 4 and Imagen 4 Fast are available via Vertex AI in EU regions – including europe-west2 (London). Availability in Frankfurt (europe-west3) varies by variant; please check the current state in the Google Cloud console.
Google Cloud guarantees EU data residency in EU configuration and offers DPA contracts for GDPR compliance. All generated images receive a SynthID watermark by default – relevant for labelling obligations under the EU AI Act.
Safety and compliance
- SynthID watermark: Visible and invisible watermarks embedded in every generated image
- Safety filters: On by default (NSFW, violence, public figures)
- EU AI Act: From August 2026, synthetic media must be labelled as AI-generated – SynthID simplifies compliance
- Copyright: Google offers limited indemnification for Vertex AI customers (details in the Vertex AI terms)
Integration with Vertex AI
Imagen 4 is natively integrated with Vertex AI and Google AI Studio. Typical integration patterns:
- REST / Python SDK: Direct API calls from your applications
- Vertex AI Pipelines: Embedded in production workflows with input and output validation
- Cloud Storage: Direct writing of generated images to GCS buckets in EU regions
- Workflows integration: Gemini for prompt optimisation, Imagen for image generation
Our recommendation
For most marketing and product workflows, Imagen 4 Standard is the right choice: good price/performance, EU-available, professional quality. For print and editorial use Imagen 4 Ultra; for real-time apps, Imagen 4 Fast.
As alternatives we evaluate Flux (EU-sovereign, Black Forest Labs) and Stability AI depending on use case. Contact us for advice on the right image-model strategy.
